FREE CD!: THE WHITE ALBUM RECOVERED – DISC #2. The Beatles' 1968 masterpiece re-imagined by the likes of The Neil Cowley Trio, Sarabeth Tucek, Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, The Ruby Suns, My Brightest Diamond and Gemma Ray. PLUS! A bonus track from a very, very special guest indeed!

QUEEN: As they gear up for the release of their first new studio album since the death of Freddie Mercury, MOJO’s Mark Blake looks back on Queen’s globe-conquering late-‘70s/early-‘80s reinvention. Cue extreme decadence, endless hit singles, that disco album and some of the most iconic facial furniture in rock history.

THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS: Alex Turner and Miles Kane have put their day jobs on hold in order to pursue a new symphonic sound that has wowed listeners everywhere. MOJO’s Tom Doyle catches up with the dynamic duo of British pop to discover exactly where it all went right.

DAVID GILMOUR: In this month’s MOJO Interview, we head to the Sussex farmhouse of one of Britain’s bona fide guitar geniuses to talk solo endeavours, early influences and his current thoughts on that band Pink Floyd.

BON IVER: With one of the albums of the year already under his belt, Justin Vernon has found himself delivering his version of Old, Weird America to an increasingly devoted audience. MOJO’s Gabe Soria travels to Wisconsin to meet 2008’s most celebrated wandering minstrel.

THE FUGS: Rock ‘n’ roll deviants, political warriors, peddlers of smut and unrelenting in their quest for truth and the justice, Ed Sanders and his band of idealistic troubadours were on a mission to set ‘60s America on fire. Michael Simmons dives into their treacherous tale.

THE BEATLES + PAUL McCARTNEY: The second part of our White Album extravaganza features another track-by-track breakdown, an in-depth look at the Manson Murders and an exclusive interview with one Paul McCartney. “We were rock ‘n’ roll!” he tells Mat Snow.

REVIEWED: Kings Of Leon’s fourth / Metallica are Death Magnetic / Mercury Rev return / Mogwai / Queen + Paul Rodgers / Jenny Lewis / Monkey / Southern Soul / Motown 10 / Dutch garage gems from Q65 / Mitty Collier / The Polydor Underground and many, many more!

PLUS! Isaac Hayes and Jerry Wexler Remembered / All Back To My Place with Lindsey Buckingham and Wanda Jackson / Syd Barrett’s early days in Cambridge / Magazine reform / In the studio with Razorlight / Todd Rundgren reveals all.

AND FINALLY…Ali and His Gang vs. Mr Tooth Decay – a very weird record indeed.

  • For those ignorant whiners above - you truly need to get it into your thick skulls that Queen are the second most loved band on the planet (after the beatles). Trouble is you people are so arrogant to presume you know what good music is - thankfully millions worldwide don't share your opinions. Queen have been slated since their beginning by individuals like yourselves and certain parts of the music press (as if the critcs ever get it right anyway), and guess what kiddies - it hasn't made a blind difference to their hugely successful career (the most weeks in the uk in the album charts since 2005; the biggest-selling album in the uk with 'greatest hits'; 300 million record sales, etc...). Facts speak alot louder than individual opinions. Anyway, it's not as if any of your little opinions will ever mean anything - unlike Queen's untouchable legacy. No-one cares if you like them or not as your opinions and musical tastes mean absolutely nothing. Ta ra.

  • Come on guys....please....Queen? I know millions like it, but millions of people can be wrong actually! I´d rather sit down and listen to the whole Modern Talking back catalogue than Queen. You´ve been on a good run with a mix of old and not so old stuff the last year, but now it´s all back to Beatles and Queen and the likes...millions of people should get something else in their lives i guess.

Check out Futurama (1975) and see where 'dear Freddie' STOLE ALL Bill Nelson's ideas for their blatant plagiarism later that year for their album and the world's most overrated single ever - Fact!

As for why the Beatles aren't on the cover, I am quite certain that they were on the cover last time because it was the anniversary of the White Album. As it's no longer their anniversary, they're not on the cover. Hope that helped. : )

Maybe they feel a bit threatened cos the Beatles usually get top billing. The fact is Queen and the Beatles both produced some fantastic music. I love them both and reckon we should see a lot more of both these classic bands. After all it's not a competition is it?

  • So I took the new MOJO with me to Vegas this weekend and left it in the hotel room, partially but not completely read. The piece I was looking forward to savoring--but which I hadn't gotten to--was the notice about Sir George Martin and the Beatles Remastered project. 2009? Can it be possible? Is there a chronology yet announced for the releases? Please, I hope it won't be chronological--I want Revolver through Abbey Road first, then Past Masters 2, than anything else in any order. I know it's perverse, but I think others would not be disappointed if it happened this way. Anyway, can anyone fill me in on what the article says please? And is there any info source anywhere else online? I am not finding much, except commentary on the MOJO article.

  • Not misspelling. I have been to the village just a few years ago. Bashir Attar's band (The Master Musicians of Jajouka) is one band, a modern brand name. The Master Musicians of Joujouka seems to be the newer incarnation of the Sufi fraternity of the musicians of the village, probably seeking a more democratic leadership of their activities (and royalties), consistently with the concept of a religious Sufi fraternity. Before using big words like 'impostors' one has to get familiar with the situation; admittedly, not easy. Certainly not our place to judge. Foreigners seem to be the ones trying to define the relationship between the 2 bands as one legit and not the other one, not so at the village; besides family ties, both bands represent income opportunities for various villagers, much needed, and in a way that showcases their musical and cultural identity, allowing to strengthen it. From what I can tell, Bashir's modern brand name has led him to explore something needed for the sound of the village to get out into the world in the modern context; he had to get out of the village, control his concept, choose unilaterally musicians, controlling royalties, etc., in the process of seeking a broader national and international recognition for the music of the village. It also allowed him to develop somewhat of a solo international career. However the The fraternity's needs were not all that fulfilled, thus the new incarnation (jOUjouka), meant to be more in sync with their traditional way of doing things, taking decisions, and sharing profits. The fraternity is the source of musical education from a very young age, the connection with the tradition, the collegial structure with an already very old recipe for longevity. Bashir's band is modern branding. Ultimately they are connected, if nothing else (not playing together), by family ties. Bashir has always the option of building a band for a given gig with musicians from outside the village. For a while he did not live in the village. Lately, it seems he may have sobered up and came back to the village. I suspect he will always be accepted in the village as family, as he is, and as Sufism is supposed to be particularly a 'Love and Peace' version of Islam. The contrast between modern branding and old style fraternity is probably the source of much misunderstanding and tensions. Maybe it is just destiny. Maybe the fraternity will ultimately spawn several personality-based brands such as Bashir's, all more or less legitimate, with more or less musicians from outside the village, with newer generations exploring their career options and opening up to the outside, although in the last few decades, the survival of the fraternity has been an issue, it will hopefully change. At this point, it seems to me the newer jOUjouka is more representative of tradition, of the collegial traditional fraternity of the musicians of the village of Jajouka /Joujouka/ Djahdjouka/ Zehjuka, Djudjuka, etc. (different pronunciations are correct).

Maybe if people could see past We Will Rock You to some of their better (but less popular) songs, then they wouldn't be bashing them. Freddie was amazing. They're all great guys and great musicians. So stop the bashing. Just beacuse The Beatles aren't on the cover when they have thier CD doesn't mean that Queen sucks. I love The Beatles. And I'll agree they're one of (if not the single) most influential band in rock. But I think Queen's music is more unique and, in my opinion, better. People are entitled to their opinion, but opinions don't have to be hurtful.

  • Oh, and just because you don't like their style doesn't mean that they suck. Their music is more complex than The Beatles (in most cases) or The Rolling Stones. And, I really don't want to be nasty, but perhaps that means that only more complex, less near-sighted people will be able to appreciate it.
